Excused Absences from Band Peformances
Dear parents of PHS Band Students; It has come to my attention that there have been an increased number of requests for"excused absences" from performances (both pep band and concerts). While these requests
are not a problem, the timing of them has been as I've been receiving these requests
during the week of the performance, which is too late. In order to re-familiarize yourself
with the PHS Bands attendance policy, I have copied it below for your convenience. The
students of the PHS Bands receive this policy at the beginning of each quarter and during
that time, it is reviewed with their instructor.
PHS RED RAIDER BAND ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Attendance at all rehearsals and Performances is REQUIRED!!! If there is a problem or
conflict, a written note or telephone call must reach the directors 3 DAYS prior to a
rehearsal and 7 DAYS prior to a performance. The ONLY exceptions to these rules are
sickness, accident or emergency. Roll Call will be taken at each rehearsal and prior to
each performance at a specified time. A tardy student, without a valid written excuse,
will receive a reduction of 1/3 letter grade for each occurrence. An absent student,
without a valid written excuse, will receive a reduction of 1 full letter grade for each
occurrence. More than 2 unexcused absences will result in a disciplinary action and may
include dismissal from the Band Program. It is our feeling that the main reason that you
are in band is to practice and perform as a group. If you continually miss practices and
performances, even with excuses, you should drop band and just take lessons. We are very
serious about this requirement. It will be unfortunate, but as always, someone will have
to test this requirement to see if it's real!! A student who is tardy or absent for any
reason will have a period of 2 school days to have their parents call or meet with Mr.
Busch and Mr. White before their grade is lowered.
